学术专题讲座摘要：In this talk, I discuss research on the way in which monolinguals and bilinguals make use of syntactic information in deciding how to formulate their utterances. I outline a model of lexical and syntactic processing that applies to both monolinguals and bilinguals. I then describe a number of experimental studies using structural priming that show that people tend to repeat syntactic choices both within and between languages. For example, they tend to use an English passive after hearing a Spanish passive, and to use a particular form of the Mandarin dative after hearing the same form of Cantonese dative. I use this research to argue that bilinguals integrate their syntactic representations as far as they can, and consider some implications of the research for second-language learning and teaching. The next part of my talk relates this account to language processing in dialogue. I argue that the strong priming that occurs between speakers in dialogue helps them come to a shared understanding and hence promotes communicative success.
